National Pancake (and Dog Biscuit) Day

Despite the fact that Shrove Tuesday was last week, just a reminder that today is National Pancake Day. Go to IHOP and get your free short stack of pancakes. Contribute generously to charity. Expect lines.

Now that that has been dispensed with, on to more important discoveries: today is also National Dog Biscuit Day. Dog biscuits have always been somewhat dubious in construction. The national varieties, to judge by the look and scent, seem to be made with volcanic ash, krill oil and shredded toilet paper tubes. Canine companions deserve better: The Internet abounds with recipes.

If time doesn't allow for homemade treats for Phaedeaux, Orange County has dedicated dog bakeries whose
recipe lists tend to look like foods humans would consider eating. It should come as no shock that high-end dog boutiques tend to be located in the 949 area code.

The
international chain Three Dog Bakery has locations in Corona del Mar
(924 Avocado, 949-760-3647) and San Clemente (118 S. El Camino Real, 949-218-3364).

The Barkery (322 Marine Ave., Newport Beach; 949-675-0364) is part bakery, part pet supply store.

North County canine guardians can get their treats at Le Woof Dog Bakery & Boutique (18306 Imperial Hwy., Yorba Linda; 714-985-0046). Featured product: pupcakes (seriously).
