Incoming: Cake, Band of Horses, Coming to Fox Theater, Dead Weather at Glass House

Back in 1996, it seemed like a pretty good bit that, post-“The Distance,” Cake would wind up as a one-hit wonder. Yet the Sacramento band became one of the most reliable commodities in modern rock, which resulted in a ton of slightly amusing novelty hits: “Never There.” “Sheep Go To Heaven.” “Short Skirt/Long Jacket.” “Love You Madly.” An instrumental version of “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” is even the theme song to NBC's (which was just renewed, a rare victory for fans of nerdy network TV shows).

Though it's been a while since Cake has had one of those slightly amusing novelty hits (their last album, Pressure Chief, came out in 2004), they're working on a new record and coming to the newly reopened Fox Theater in Pomona on August 27. Tickets are $35 (!) and on sale Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m.

And that's not all! Whee!

Perennial indie rock favorites Band of Horses (from Seattle, of all places-who knew they'd produce successful musicians?) is also coming to the venue, on August 29. Tickets for that are $23, you can start getting them Saturday, May 16 and 10 a.m.

Down the street at Fox's, uh, “cousin,” the Glass House, the “Scream the Prayer Tour”–featuring Haste the Day, The Chariot, Sleeping Giant and other bands I know nothing about it but likely some of you do–hits July 9, $17 in advance, $20 at the door. One of the bands is called “Gwen Stacy,” and any band named after a Spider-Man supporting character is A-OK in my book. On sale Saturday at noon.

Also at the Glass House: The Dead Weather, the new SUPERGROUP with Alison Mosshart of the Kills, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, Jack Lawrence of the Raconteurs and the Greenhornes, and some dude named Jack White. That's August 27, about three months after Mosshart's performance at the very same venue with the Kills–this coming Thursday, May 21.
