Microfest

Imagine a symphony—but the edges are smoothes out, the drops are minimal, and the notes seem to have hardly any space between them. This is microtonal music, a term musicphiles and sonic scientists know, but the rest of us? Yeah, no idea. The effect is dreamlike and altogether soothing—and now Chapman University dedicates an entire festival to this unique genre, called, fittingly, Microfest. The roster features two premieres: the world debut of the microtonal master's “Parable” along with the SoCal premiere of the “String Quartet #10” performed by the Del Sol Quartet. Also on bill is John Schneider's microtonal guitar and vocal performance of “The Tavern,” and the blues-inspired “Suite for Microtonal Piano” by Chapman faculty member Aron Kallay.
