Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, Alleged Fashion Island Shooter, Faces Up to 115 Years in Prison

The Orange County District Attorney's office (OCDA) just announced that 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola of Garden Grove faces 66 felony counts and, if convicted, up to 115 years in state prison for allegedly firing multiple rounds from a semi-automatic handgun in the busy Fashion Island parking lot Saturday.

The OCDA statement also links Gurrola to a previous shots-fired incident at the tony shopping mall.

Editor Gustavo Arellano broke the news of the latest incident for the Weekly Saturday evening:

BREAKING NEWS: Authorities: Shooting Today at Fashion Island; No Injuries (Thank God), Person in Custody

And I followed up yesterday with videos from terrified shoppers and more details on the alleged shooter:

And yet, based on today's OCDA statement, this is apparently a much more serious case than even we first reported:

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 15, 2012, Gurrola is accused of
driving his white Honda Civic and parking in the Macy's parking lot at
Fashion Island in Newport Beach. He is accused of exiting his vehicle
armed with a Glock .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun and six magazines.
He is accused of raising his firearm and discharging 54 rounds of
ammunition in the direction of the Macy's building. As a result of the
shooting, Gurrola is accused of causing a mother and her 4-year-old
daughter to suffer minor injuries from being pushed by panicked
shoppers, who were running for cover. None of the bullets struck the
building.

It was previously reported Gurrola had more ammo in this trunk when he was taken down without incident by two Newport Beach Police Department officers on bicycles. The OCDA claims the suspect had ammunition for different weapons–including .44 caliber, .380
caliber, and .38 caliber–but no other weapons.

Subsequent investigation by Newport Beach police linked Gurrola to an incident at approximately the same time of day at Fashion Island on Nov.
16, a Friday, when 10 rounds were discharged from a firearm in a
parking lot.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Robert Mestman will request at Gurrola's arraignment later this afternoon in Santa Ana that the unemployed security guard, who may have been living out of his car, be held without bail.

He is charged with 54 felony counts of shooting at an occupied building, two felony counts of aggravated assault with sentencing enhancements for
the use of a firearm and, for the previous incident, 10 felony counts of negligent discharge of a firearm. As we previously noted, Gurrola apparently has no criminal history in California, had been registered
to have a firearm before his permit expired in 2001 and had registered
as a guard-patrolman with the state Bureau
of Security and Investigative Services.
