Man Attempts Suicide (and Survives) in Front of San Clemente Amtrak Train

UPDATE, APRIL 18, 8:07 A.M.: Passenger Patty Mitchell wrote to us and informed us that, on the train ride to San Diego, the conductor said the man survived the suicide attempt because he tripped as he tried to throw himself in front of the train. As a result, he bounced off the side of the train.

ORIGINAL POST, APRIL 17, 6:03 A.M.: On April 16 around 11:45 a.m., a man jumped into an Amtrak train going from San Clemente Pier to San Diego in what San Clemente police say appears to be a suicide attempt. Lt. Dan Dwyer says a witness saw the man jump out of the bushes, jump into the train two times, and survive with severe bruises. The name of the man has not been released.

A passenger named Patty Mitchell wrote on her Facebook (link shared in the Tweet above) that, according to an announcement made by a train conductor, the man was taken to San Clemente Hospital shortly afterward. Lt. Dwyer adds that the man has been put on a 5150 psychiatric hold for having a mental disorder that could make him dangerous to himself, others, or be severely disabled.

Amtrak has not yet commented on the event.
