Luis Rodriguez Talks About Gang Life At Libreria Martinez

As Santa Ana celebrated Dia de los Muertos, Libreria Martinez hosted author Luis Rodriguez. Rodriguez, of course, is best known for the 1993 memoir of gang life, Always Running: La Vida Loca Gang Days in L.A., which discusses his early years of living in East Los Angeles as a gang member. Having witnessed countless shootings, beatings, and senseless acts of street crime, Rodriguez found a way out of that life style through the art of writing, and has become a literary superhero telling his inspiring story.

As soon as Rodriguez entered the small bookstore, secular saint
Rueben Martinez embraced him with a big hug and the crowd welcomed him
with loud applause. Rodriguez read a few passages out of his new book,
It Calls You Back: An Odyssey About Love, Addictions, Revolutions and
Healing
. The book is about the struggles Rodriguez had to go through in
order to become a writer, father, husband, revolutionary, and healer. It
Calls You Back
tells the story of when Rodriguez was faced with
addictions, family abuse, and a son who served a fifteen-year in prison.
Always Running was inspired in part by Rodriguez's son, and he made it
clear on Saturday that he wanted his story known in order to inspire
those who are going through something similar.

Although Rodriguez is busy traveling around the United States
promoting his book and mentoring gang members, he'll be back in Southern
California on November 12 at Vincent Prince Art Museum in East Los
Angeles. As for the next Libreria Martinez book signing: Julia Amante,
author of Say You'll Be Mine will be at Libreria Martinez on November 10 at 7 p.m. See you there!
