Louis & Keely: Live at the Sahara

Chastity Belt’s music has all the right elements of catchy indie pop— a rhythmic bassline opening each track, sunny guitar melodies and backing vocal harmonies. Yet for this all-female quartet from Washington, their pro-feminist messages embedded within their song lyrics are a bonus. Reassuring lines like “To all the girls in the world/ Trying to take off their shirts/ Ladies it’s okay to be slutty” (off the track “Cool Sluts”) go against their ironically Puritanical band name. And while their music lacks the feral roar of Sleater Kinney or Bikini Kill, there’s still plenty of badass grrl power to be felt in these tracks. Catch this band of femme outsiders at their stint at the Continental Room tonight, and bring your slutty friends to sing along.
