Loretta Sanchez: CIA Torture Report is “Long Overdue,” Exposes “Unconscionable Actions”

The Senate Intelligence Committee report released today on the CIA's interrogation of suspected terrorists after the 9/11 attacks–which concluded the agency's tactics were far more brutal than previously disclosed and failed to elicit information about any imminent threats to the U.S.–was “long overdue” and exposed “unconscionable actions,” according to Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Garden Grove).

“Today's release of the report on the CIA's detention and interrogation program is a needed and long overdue step,” Sanchez says in a statement from her office. “The American people deserve transparency about the CIA's actions, actions that are way out of line with our nation's values. As a world leader, a bastion of democracy and human rights and a signatory to the Geneva Conventions, the United States should not be engaging in these unconscionable actions. It is especially troubling that the CIA deliberately concealed the true effectiveness of their techniques.

“It has been shown time and time again that the interrogation techniques described in this report do not yield reliable, actionable intelligence. And if the tactics used were ever even partly useful, it was certainly never worth it.

“I hope this report cements our rejection of these methods permanently.”

Here she is talking about it on MSNBC:

Sanchez serves as ranking member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces and is the second ranked Democrat on the Committee on Homeland Security.

The rest of Orange County's congressional delegation–all Republicans–have not yet commented publicly on the Senate report.

The Daily Beast has rounded up the report's most gruesome moments.
