Lolipop Records Takeover This Saturday at Can U Not Vintage in Santa Ana

This Saturday's Downtown Santa Ana artwalk is the place to be, not just for the Konsept Arts and Music Fest that will dominate the East End with its multiple music stages, but for the exciting Lolipop Records takeover happening at Can U Not Vintage Saturday night.

If you're not familiar, Can U Not (formerly known as Tarte Vintage), is a vintage clothing store tucked away behind an alley where the Yost theater looms a short distance away. Can U Not hosts a monthly themed art show to honor the artwalk, and this month's is no different: nearly 20 artists will be contributing art inspired by the '90s pop culture (all of the artists are children of the '90s anyway).

But what's a local art show nowadays without a couple bands playing? In the past few months Can U Not has hosted numerous local bands including Hollow Ran, Technocrat, GRN+GLD, Canyons, Media Jeweler and Palm Reader as well as SoCal buzz bands Rudy De Anda and Santoros.

Here's a run down of what bands to expect: Laguna Beach trio Your Ugly Sister will be on hand providing fuzzed out garage punk (with some members driving down from San Francisco just for this show). Wild Pack of Canaries frontman Rudy De Anda and his self-titled side project are making their second appearance at Can U Not this year. Los Angeles's Death Lens will bring in some sunny surf punk with some psychedelic flourishes to set the evening mood just right.

Although I coined this show to be a Lolipop Records takeover, that technically isn't true; the majority of bands are Lolipops-affiliated, but overall this weekend's event will include a who's who of venerable talent from different labels, including Levitation Room (on the Burger Records label), Golden Drugs (Porch Party Records) from Oakland, and DJ's Polyester and Master Droog (Ghoulhouse Records).

Huntington Beach fuzz punks The Rooms are also enlisted to shake the art off the walls, while female fronted lo-fi group luurid will be wailing through their first live appearance as well.

Thanks to Can U Not co-owner Chris Gonzalez's efforts, the quirky shop is quickly becoming a favorite stop during the art walks amongst the local artists, hipsters, punks, and hip hop heads. Shows at Can U Not are becoming more frequent, so its fair to say this place will have become a popular name within the county (if it hasn't already).
