Lisa Loeb; Jill Sobule

So let’s remember when: Lisa Loeb got her big chance with her song “Stay” and the end credits of Reality Bites, and when her song “Supermodel” came out in Clueless, Jill Sobule got a nice push to the head of a pack including the likes of Alanis Morissette and Liz Phair. That was a focused little pop moment, and even now, you’ll hear both their hits on the kind of radio stations that have decided the ‘90s finally qualify as classic. But both Loeb and Sobule had more interesting days ahead of them, routed through reality TV (Loeb) and song-title coincidence (Sobule’s “I Kissed A Girl”) and even children’s music and custom eyewear (Loeb again, of course). With goofball alt-hype now mercifully dissipated, Sobule’s Zevon-meets-Wainwright story-songs and Loeb’s winsome latter-day power-pop songs get welcome breathing room.
