As the Gashouse Gang known as UPI previously reported, Cal State Fullerton researchers had 22 women–11 collegiate athletes and 11 rec players–step onto a
special vibration platform in their normal batting stances for 30
seconds before taking live pitches.
To the delight of the swingers and eggheads, bat speeds increased just as they would have from taking the standard “dry swings” in the on-deck circle.
So, what does it all mean?
“The results indicate that bat speed was not different after warmup
using whole-body vibration alone, dry swings, or whole-body vibration
with dry swings,” states the author of the study published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning
Research (trust me, wait for the movie).
Indeed, whole-body vibration alone produced an average 42 mph bad speeds compared to 40
mph after dry swings and 38 mph after whole-body vibration plus dry
swings. And the women were picking up good vibrations be they college softball players or recreational athletes.
Does this mean platforms (and really long extension cords) will be plopped over on-desk areas? It's doubtful. But wouldn't the research thus indicate even greater bat-speed benefits from swinging the following before stepping up to face the chin music?
