Kary Mullis, Ron Finley and Sara Volz Unveiled as September TEDxOrangeCoast Speakers

TEDxOrangeCoast, which stages TED conferences in Orange County, has announced tickets are now on sale and three speakers have been revealed for September's event at the Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa.

The bright-minded ones are a chemist, a volunteer garden builder and a high school science whiz.

The most known would be Kary Mullis, who received a Nobel Prize in chemistry for his invention of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). He was recently written up in a Boston Globe opinion piece about congressional funding of scientific research.

Also speaking will be Ron Finley, founder of L.A. Green Grounds, a volunteer organization that installs gardens in vacant, blighted lots. He was profiled in The New York Times last month as a “pavement pounding Johnny Appleseed.”

Rounding out the announced TEDxOrangeCoast speakers is Sara Volz, a high school senior who won the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search by demonstrating how to create biofuel from algae. She explains her research in this month's Popular Mechanics.

TEDxOrangeCoast is scheduled for Sept. 20-21 at Segerstrom Center.
