Juan Carlos Linares Identified as Man Shot by Anaheim Police Two Weeks Ago

Anaheim police shot Juan Carlos Linares back on October 15, but the public never knew his name until now. Shortly after the Weekly inquired, the department issued a press release this week identifying the 22-year-old Anaheim resident and revealing more info about the incident.

Details remain slim despite the disclosure. Around 1:20 p.m., police tried to contact Linares near Euclid Street and Ball Road on the city's west side. The Orange County Probation Department requested they do so because he had violated the terms and conditions of his probation.

Linares, previously convicted of felony assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, led police on a short-lived seven-minute car chase that ended on Valdina Street near Gauer Elementary school. When it did, an officer-involved shooting happened. Why? Check back in about a year or so for the Orange County District Attorney's take after they wrap up their investigation.

New Anaheim police spokesman Sgt. Daron Wyatt tells the Weekly that names of people shot by the department become public record after booking. (And if Wyatt's name itself rings a bell, he recently beat a federal lawsuit that claimed he literally slammed a false confession out of someone). Linares only recently got in good enough health after the shooting to be booked. His new digs are at the Orange County Jail where he's being held with no bail after being arrested for violating probation.

Linares is the fourth person to be shot by Anaheim police this year. The Weekly filed a records request to learn the name of the cop (or cops) who opened fire. Stay tuned…
