Authorities have identified a 43-year-old man who allegedly wormed his way into a Garden Grove home and threatened to kill a female resident with a knife before he was shot dead by police Saturday morning.
He was John Brantley, Jr., who pleaded guilty July 24 to misdemeanor grand theft auto and was sentenced to 120 days in jail and three years' probation, according to Orange County court records.
Just after 8 a.m. Saturday, Brantley is said to have tried to force his way into a home in the 9900 block of Aldgate Avenue, Garden Grove, where residents called emergency to report an attempted burglary in progress, according to Lt. Ben Stauffer, the Garden Grove Police spokesman.

Brantley said from the other side of the door that he was being chased and asked to be let in, but once inside he armed himself with a knife and threatened to kill a female resident, Stauffer said.
A male resident armed himself with a shotgun and was later stabbed in the arm, said Stauffer, who added cops managed to get inside and confront Brantley before the officer-involved shooting happened. The shooter has not been identified.
Brantley was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died from his injuries.
The unidentified male resident received treatment for his stab wound and is expected to survive.
The Orange County District Attorney's office is investigation the police shooting.
