Jim Breuer's Top Five Head Banging Heavy Metal Classics

Jim Breuer, a beloved comic and heavy metal connoisseur, has entertained us with immortal SNL characters (Goat Boy!), cult classic films we can't seem to get enough of, and through his laugh out loud hilarious stand-up comedy. But it's high time we hear about something new in Breuer Land. Well peeps, the wait is over. Thanks to EPIX, his first ever stand-up comedy special for the channel, “Jim Breuer: And Laughter For All” will be premiering on June 7th at 7pm.

Metallica puns aside, we knew when it came to nailing down a list for the “Top Five Head Banging Heavy Metal Classics,” there was no one better to give us insight than the comic best known for rocking the fuck out. Now if only this list were done in video so we could all see him bang his head along with the tunes…

Breuer Disclaimer: I keep going back and forth with these so I have to say, it's hard to put them in a particular order. There are so many to put on here and I didn't want to add too many Metallica songs although, they control a lot for me. But with every single one of these songs, as soon as they turn on no matter what I'm doing, I will drop everything and give full blown, 100% passion, thrash, and bang my head to.

5- Judas Priest- “Rapid Fire”
Priest was my first love and still to this day, I just never get sick of them. Even with Metallica and AC/DC I go in my waves, but Priest I do not get sick of. I think they are the most underrated metal starters. Everyone always says Sabbath and Ozzy and them, and yes, but Priest? With the duel guitars and when I first heard “Rapid Fire” live? I just couldn't believe what a punch that song had. I mean the opening lyrics of, “Pounding the world like a battering ram.” I'm sold! It's got great hooks and great riffs. And the whole beginning when they break it down? Ugh! It's everything you want from a metal song.

4- Megadeath- “Peace Sells”
Ohhhh, god! Another one! To this day I love everything about this song. And the chug, I can't get enough of that chug! And that attitude! It defines every judgmental thing we put on faith, that we call politics, that we call debating, that we try to define ourselves better than one another by your so called faith or education. This simplifies it all. “What do you mean I ain't kind? Just not your kind. What do you mean I couldn't be President of the United States of America? Tell me something, it's still we the people, right?” Ughh, I love it! It's one of the all-time greatest Breuer metal songs!

3- Accept- “Balls to the Wall”
Accept was a band that came and went but it's still there kind of. Everyone knows the song “Balls to the Wall” but they underestimate it because they just think it's funny because the word “balls” are in it. But again, defining metal, it's all about when the poor and when the held down finally revolt against the ones that hold them down. They finally turn the tables. It's such a great revolution rage against the machine song. When all the guys are singing that, “Ahhhhh, ahhhh, ahhhhhh,” and the “Watch the damned, God bless ya! They're gonna break their chains! No, you can't stop them!” Balls to the walllll!! Great guitar lick. I love it!

2- Metallica- “Whiplash”
I think Metallica should have their own head banging section so I even though I'm putting two in, I had to narrow it down from which ones really get me every single time. Although, “For Whom the Bell Tolls” is a really big one for me so it's very hard to leave that one out. But “Whiplash” was the first one that just defined all metal. Whiplash defines everything about metal. The licks, the ending…WHIPLASH! Baaaahhh nahhhh! WHIPLASH! Ughhh! The speed metal of it is as thrashing as you're gonna get!

1- Metallica- “Blackened”
Yessss!! “Blackened!” This song is like going on a ride. You're banging your head a certain way and then, it makes a left turn and you have a whole new direction to whack your head around in. “To begin whipping dance of the dead. Blackened is the end!” And then the break down is like, baaanaanahh chug, chug, chug, chug, baaanaanahhh! Blackened! Good thrashing part. Again, it's almost a shame that I have to leave out any Metallica because there are so many others.

OC Weekly (Ali Lerman): I wish we were on Skype right now because I want to see if you're making those “devil horn” hand gestures in the air.

Jim Breuer: The thing that always drove me nuts about metal is the “devil horns.” It was never the devil. To me it was just the opposite. It's just power and metal and we could see through it all. We could see through the nonsense. To me, that is metal. Not the devil. When people are like, “They're evil!” It's like, no! To me metal was a firm warning against the machine, whatever machine it is that holds you down in life. It's a stern warning of empowerment of rising against that.

I thought that was the name of them but I promise to call them “angel horns” from now on.

[Laughs.] Angel horns! I like the name, “horns of force.”

Or maybe “horny force?”

[Laughs.] Yes! Or the “hornied force.” That would be good too!
