It's Hot, Hot, HOT!!! in OC Through Sunday

It is going to be hot, Hot, HOT this weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). An “Urgent Heat Advisory” predicts temperatures nearing 100 degrees F a few miles inland of the Orange Coast Friday and Saturday.

Some seven-day forecasts on the teevee claim it will be hotter some days in inland Orange County than in the Inland Empire.

Our Indian summer is being pushed into the area by strong, gusty, offshore winds that began late last night and continue through this afternoon in the canyons, along the coastal foothills and near the Santa Ana Mountains. Peak gusts up to 50 mph had been predicted through this morning before weakening to 30-35 mph bursts by afternoon.

The winds and a strong ridge of high pressure are bringing the hot conditions that are due Friday through Sunday and expected to be 10 to 20 degrees above normal. The heat advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. Friday through 8 p.m. Saturday, which is expected to be the hottest day. Daytime highs of 91-97 degrees a few miles from beaches and farther inland along the coast are coming, says the NWS.

Slow cooling is expected to begin Sunday (although it will still be hotter than usual) and continue cooling through early next week as the ridge continues to weaken.

The NWS advises heat can be stressful to humans and animals, making it difficult for bodies to acclimate and remain hydrated. To avoid heat stress or illness, you are advised to:

* drink plenty of water;

* wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing;

* know the signs of heat exhaustion and stroke;

* reschedule strenuous outdoor activities for early mornings or evenings and take plenty of rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned places, which are also the spots you need to go to if you are overcome by the heat;

* call 9-1-1 If you believe you are suffering heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.
