Irvine Hits It Out of the Park to Land Among Top 10 U.S. Cities for Recreational Activities

NerdWallet, an online source for consumers to compare the best credit card, checking accounts or savings account terms, apparently gets out and stretches its NerdWallet legs sometimes.

It's put together a list of the top 10 cities in the country when it comes to recreational amenities.

Irvine feet plants at No. 9 to win recognition as the only California city on the list.

Sandwiched between No. 8. Washington, D.C., and No. 10. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, here's what NerdWallet says:

9. Irvine, California

Irvine offers residents access to trails in the Irvine Ranch Conservancy, Bommer Canyon, Turtle Rock Nature Center and acres of open space. You can find aquatics centers, athletic fields, neighborhood and community parks, skate parks and tennis courts. The city has adult sports leagues for basketball, softball and soccer, and many youth sports options. The city provides an array of summer camps for children and UC Irvine's Campus Recreation offers Anteater Recreation Summer Camps and weekend activities for local kids. Your dog can get some exercise on the nearly three acres of field at Central Bark.

Just imagine how many spaces Irvine would move up if it also had a great, big park on a former Marine air base!

NerdWallet, which reportedly considered 95 different cities for its list, has Minneapolis, Minnesota, at numero uno.

The 10 chosen ones rated best of the best for: number of recreational facilities; acres of parkland as a percentage of city area; number of recreation and senior centers; and number of playgrounds, according to NerdWallet.
