Irvine Cops Hold DUI Checkpoint Tonight

UPDATE, FEB. 26, 11:20 A.M.: Santa Ana cops are jumping into the weekend anti-DUI derby with a checkpoint from 9 p.m. Saturday through 2 a.m. Sunday in the 2100 block of South Raitt Street, SAPD just announced.

ORIGINAL POST, FEB. 26, 6:05 A.M.: If you plan on passing through the area of Barranca Parkway and Culver Drive between 8 tonight and 2 a.m. Saturday, you would be best not to do so while boozed, blazing on drugs or hopped up on tussin.

That’s because the Irvine Police Department holds a sobriety checkpoint in that area between those hours.

“Most motorists will experience little or no delay,” promises the department’s Tim Knight, who adds the point is to both educate drivers and maintain safe streets.

This is actually the fourth in a series of 10 checkpoints IPD has planned through September.

Funding for them comes from a California Office of Traffic Safety grant, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Irvine cops highly recommend the use of sober designated drivers by those bent on getting sideways.
