An unarmed 22-year-old Anaheim man was shot dead early Tuesday by a police officer in that city.
The deceased was Gustavo Najera, according to the Orange County sheriff-coroner.
Anaheim Police dispatch received a call about a disturbance at an apartment complex, where someone knocked on the door of a unit, left briefly and then returned to knock on the door again.
One responding officer checked the apartment complex on foot while his partner drove to nearby Sage Park at 1313 W. Lido Place.
That is where the officer-involved shooting happened around 12:40 a.m., according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Daron Wyatt, who provided no further details about what led up to the confrontation.
Najera died at 1:41 a.m. at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, according to the coroner.
Wyatt says the deceased was not armed, the unidentified officer was wearing a body camera and that footage will be sent to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, which investigates officer-involved shootings.
