Gold Daggers

Gold Daggers are into the Melvins-Big Business school of making the maximum out of a minimum—they’re two dudes and two instruments playing too loud because that’s how they like it, and their self-titled new album is bristling with AmRep-style loud rock that’s a downer in all the good ways. (When they really get roaring, like on “Silent Cries From Middle Management,” they even start to sound a little bit like legendary Texan snarlers the Dicks.) In 26 minutes, they wrestle 14 songs to the ground, and live they’re probably even more capable—dark little rooms with cheap liquor tend to really bring out the best in this kind of band. It’s not pretty, but neither is much about living.
