Garden Grove and Long Beach Hold DUI Checkpoints Saturday Night

The Garden Grove and Long Beach police departments hold DUI/drivers license checkpoints in their respective cities Saturday night.

No exact location for either operation was initially released.

The Garden Grove checkpoint is scheduled to run from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., while the one in Long Beach ends at the same time but begins two hours earlier, at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The reason for the OC checkpoint, which will be placed in an area with a history of collisions and DUI arrests?

“Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed seven lives and resulted in 200 injury crashes harming 87 of our friends and neighbors,” says Garden Grove Police Sgt. J. Fischer.

Law enforcement agencies up and down the state claim checkpoints are deterrents. Specially trained officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment as well as checking drivers for proper licensing, according to the department, which swears motorists will only be delayed momentarily.

Funding for both ops comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
