From Our Inbox: Is There Such A Thing As An OC Music Scene?

So today I got an e-mail from a band that kind of echoed more than a few people's sentiments about the music scene in Orange County. Basically it said something to the effect of, “OC doesn't really have much of a music scene at all. Long Beach has some cool bands happening but that's about it.”

There is the argument that Orange County is so geographically huge, it's hard for people to get together to create a movement, or a specific sound that's centrally located in Orange County. Long Beach is different, of course. But in South County and cities like
Irvine and Tustin, where can you go if you want to watch cool bands other than the Detroit?

On that note, there also aren't many venues booking national touring acts you want to
watch.

Still, I'm not sure I agree with that e-mail. I think the OC music scene is disparate, but not
nonexistent. There are little pockets of scenes that you can visit, but
because of all those reasons I mentioned, music lovers have to work a lot harder to get their ear candy — or just spend a lot on gas to drive to shows.

This isn't a fully formed thought — I just want to know what audiences think of the OC music scene. So weigh in; post your comments below.
