Fergie's Prom Date Headed for the Slammer

Gossip-mongering TMZ.com breaks the story that an Orange County jury today convicted Vincent Dean Malicek on one count of armed bank robbery for a September heist at a Wells Fargo Bank in Santa Ana.

What's that? You've never heard of a celebrity named Vincent Dean Malicek? That's because he isn't. But he was pop tart Fergie's prom date way back when. Now he'll get to replay that magical evening over and over again as he serves up to 98 months behind bars.

Kudo's to TMZ for their headline, “Fergie's Prom Date Guilty-licious.”

The Orange County Register, which near as I can tell never reported Malicek's arrest (you try using their funked-up search engine), did carry a report on the original Sept. 3 robbery. At 2:20 p.m. on that Wednesday afternoon in the bank inside the Ralphs grocery store at 2741 MacArthur Boulevard (which, oddly, was the last Wells Fargo branch I was in), a white dude — 25 to 35 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, weighing about 180 to 190 pounds and having a medium build, with short brown hair, green eyes, a fair complexion and wearing a gray T-shirt with a Guitar Hero logo on the front — walked up to a clerk and handed her a note demanding all the money.

Santa Ana police Cpl. Jose Gonzalez told the Reg at the time the robber pointed a silver handgun at the teller as she retrieved money from the drawer and handed it to the man, who fled the scene–but not before his image was captured by a surveillance camera.

The teller later identified Malicek as the robber based on photos shown her. TMZ reported that Malicek was Fergie's (real name: Stacy Ann Ferguson) prom date in 1993, and among the tons of reader comments their web posts have generated was one from someone who said his siblings attended Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights with the future diva.

But the most interesting posts have come from someone identifying herself as “Dean's Mom.” Here's what she wrote this afternoon:

This is my last post. Today at 10:30 a.m., an Orange County jury found my son guilty. We are all shocked. Now I can clearly see how so many innocent people are sent to prison. We trust the jury to be fair and intelligent. Apparently this is too much to ask for. An innocent man is going to prison. My son will be in prison during the last few years of my life. His son will not have a father for the first 6 years of his life. Dean told his attorney to let everyone know that he will be okay and that he will make the best of it. There was not one shred of evidence. The DNA proved that he was not one of the individuals at the counter. No gun, no clothes, no money, no dye-stained anything…how can this happen? The evidence that was used against him (in violation of case law) all came from Lisa.

Near as can be told, Lisa is carrying the convicted man's baby and fingered him for the FBI also, although she now apparently says she was tricked. “Several people are convinced that Dean is exactly where Lisa wants him to be,” writes “Dean's Mom.” “First she hates him then she loves. Then hate and now love. She is now saying that she loves him and will wait for him…what do you think?”

Her posts have generated a lot of angry responses from other folks convinced her son – if that man convicted is her son – is guilty and that she's an enabler. That last one was not, as advertised, her final post. In another at 3:40 p.m. today, she claims her son was not the man in the surveillance photos, was railroaded and that, “All of the research that I found stated that Orange County juries find the Defendant guilty 85% of the time. Apparently Dean is now in that 85%.”

She signs off with some words for her critics:

[S]ince Dean cannot read these posts…try to be somewhat respectful. I just lost my only son. This really is unnecessary [sic]. Thanks.

No word on what Fergie makes of all this, but one thing is clear: she was a lot hotter in high school.
