Even the Pixies Celebrate the Rescue of the Chilean Miners

The Pixies headlined their first-ever show in Santiago, Chile last night–the same day that 33 miners were rescued from 69 days of being trapped 2000 feet below ground.

Lead singer Black Francis said they were so moved by the story, they wanted to do something to say how much the band was affected by the events in Chile.

“So we played a special set at tonight's show, 33 songs for the 33 miners, the longest set we've ever played as a band.” (What, no Oakleys?)

Black Francis added, “We found out five minutes before we went on stage that all of the miners had safely reached the surface. This was definitely one of the most meaningful show we've ever played.”

Despite the “Estaba pensando sobre viviendo con mi sister en New Jersey, Ella me dijo que es una vida buena alla, Bien rica bien chevere, Y voy!  Puñeta!” from the song “Vamos,” Black Francis says he doesn't speak much Spanish. Here's a clip of the introduction to the band's set.
