Eternal Thou

Matthew McCray's abstract sci-fi play, which he wrote, produced and directed, comes to Orange County this week—trailing behind it a wake of acclaim from Los Angeles, where it debuted last year. In his tale (and, sadly, in many of our own lives), the Internet plays a main character at the center of the entire story—an actor portrays the Internet as an actual living thing, growing from a bumbling adolescent into a mighty superior. But this machine is looking for something specific: enlightenment. Comparisons to Karel Capek's 1921 R.U.R. have been suggested more than once, but Eternal Thou isn't just another “machines take over humanity” story (though we like those), it's existential, multi-media, cerebral, and wholly unique.
