A Laguna Woods woman was sentenced to three years of probation today after pleading guilty to helping an 86-year-old World War II veteran commit suicide in 2011 by serving him yogurt spiked with Oxycontin.
Elizabeth Jane Barrett, 66, took part in the assisted suicide despite Jack Koency not being terminally ill, bedridden or immobile, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office (OCDA).

But he wanted to die, having made his own funeral arrangements the same day he willingly ate what forever will be known as Non-Activia.
As my colleague R. Scott Moxley previously reported, Barrett was likely
unaware that Koency's Laguna Niguel residence had hidden cameras on Sept. 30, 2011, when she was captured crushing a lethal amount of Oxy into Koency's yogurt.

Koency, who'd made his own funeral arrangements earlier that day, ate the yogurt, went to his bedroom and passed away. Before Barrett made her exit, the cameras caught her taking medals from the man's wall.
She copped today to felony assisted suicide. Without the guilty plea, she faced up to three years in state prison. “When making the sentencing
recommendation,” an OCDA statement reads, “the People considered the nature of the crime, the
impact to and wishes of the victim's family, and the defendant's lack of
criminal record and medical condition.”
