Early Years of Snoop Dogg

A cruise through Eastside Long Beach passing by V.I.P. Records can’t help but summon Snoop Dogg nostalgia. The image of the rapper on the rooftop during his “What’s My Name” music video is an iconic one. Long Beach documentarian Duke Givens snapped that scene and more, and now he’s opening up his private collection of Snoop Dogg photography for the ‘SNOOP: The Early Years of Snoop Dogg’ exhibit. Givens’ first project came in 1995 when his Stop Gang Violence calendar featured the rapper alongside fellow West Coast legends Warren G and Nate Dogg. But his friendship with Snoop Dogg dates much further back than that to 1983, ten years before Doggystyle exploded on the rap scene. Catch rare images of Calvin Broadus as a young pup with the exhibit running through March.
