Insane or not, Gabrielle Dion, Ricky Yarnall and David Valiante at
Laguna Beach's Broadway by Amar Santana have indeed been creating enormous batches of
cocktails, carbonating them, and selling the large-batch Moscow Mules
from a standard beer tap for $12.
You can go from order to that first thirst-quenching sip in fifteen seconds flat, a bonus when you've been walking around in the warmth looking at art for hours.
The drink is simple and uses the standard recipe: Smirnoff vodka–yes, really, Smirnoff–lime, and ginger beer. It's put into kegs and carbonated, then drawn off one frosty, ice-filled mug at a time to a thirsty and grateful public. Whoever invented the combination of vodka, lime and ginger was obviously a genius, but just like draft beer tastes better and more refreshing than bottled beer, draft Moscow Mules are lighter, airier, more refreshing than the same drink made to order in a cup. They're immensely popular; during a recent visit, as many Moscow Mules went out as martinis, which is amazing.
It's nearly always available; just look for the sign of the upturned copper mug on the leftmost tap. We have to wonder what's next–French 75 on tap? Tom Collins?
