Drew Colston Stelp Accused of Cross-County Robbery, Police Chase, Double Homicide Spree

Drew Colston Stelp is one bad mofo. The 51-year-old already had a felony strike on his record when he launched into what authorities describe as a drug- and drink-fueled, cross-county crime spree that included a home-invasion robbery of his sister's place in Garden Grove, a police chase in Newport Beach and the murders of two elderly people in Moreno Valley.

Stelp had been wanted in Garden Grove since his sister's home there had been broken into and her husband and their maid were tied up. The brief, high-speed pursuit happened last Thursday after Newport Beach cops tried to arrest Stelp for the home-invasion robbery. Believed to be under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs, Stelp was slightly injured in the chase.

When family members of two women who live in the Moreno Valley home one of them owns learned of Stelp's arrest in Newport Beach, they asked police in the Riverside County city to check on the ladies. Stelp had been their caregiver, although he failed to live up to that title when police discovered the bodies of the women. The cause of death for both has not been released.

Stelp was arrested in connection with the Moreno Valley deaths on Monday. He was charged Wednesday with two counts of first-degree murder, burglary, two counts each of attempted murder and robbery, and a sentence-enhancing allegation of
taking multiple lives in the same crime.

The sentencing enhancement allegation is key; it could make Stelp eligible for the death penalty. Needless to say, he's being held without bail.
