Dead/Not Dead

Thousands of sandbags filled and stacked by volunteers this winter are now falling apart. The Great Wall of Straw Bales is tumbling down. It's summer-post-wildfires, post-floods-in Silverado Canyon. Hot, too. Lots of bugs. Just the way the eastern canyons crowd likes it. Because you can be a regular tree-hugger anywhere, but here they've got burned trees to embrace, as well as the enduring beauty and wildness of open space, wildflowers and stars. The Sierra Club and Canyon Land Conservation Fund want to keep it that way, organizing this festival as a fund-raiser to save the wilderness. Musical acts include live old-time bluegrass, rock N blues, and Grateful Dead cover band Cubensis. There will be a catered banquet dinner, speakers and eco-exhibits-all benefitting preservation and protection. So organize a carpool, apply a little extra citronella, bring your checkbook and find your way to this festival fund-raiser in one of the prettiest spots in our county.
