Cypress College must've slayed it with state reviewers because the community college received initial approval Tuesday to offer four-year bachelor degrees in mortuary science.

A pilot program given preliminary approval by the Legislature and Gov. Jerry Brown would also allow Santa Ana College to develop a four-year bachelor's degree program in occupational studies.
The programs still must undergo review by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office, further consultation with the Cal State University and University of California systems and then final approval by the Board of Governors in March.
The Orange County community colleges were not alone in receiving preliminary nods. City News Service reports the others are:
* Antelope Valley College, airframe manufacturing technology;
* Foothill College, dental hygiene;
* West Los Angeles College, dental hygiene;
* MiraCosta College, bio-manufacturing;
* Rio Hondo College, automotive technology;
* San Diego Mesa College, health information management;
* Santa Monica College, interaction design.
