Customer Sneaks in a Balut Slurp at 99 Ranch Market!



Balut, of course, needs little introduction 'round these parts, other than maybe a clarification for non-Southeast Asians: the dish is so popular that there are places in OC devoted solely to selling balut (or its Vietnamese counterpart, hot vit lon) by the egg case, and that Asian supermarkets in la naranja do the same.

Factor in the universal instinct of trying to sneak in a bite of a particular produce that calls to you at your local supermarket, and you have the following tale, which happened yesterday at the 99 Ranch Market in Anacrime.

SO…I was at Ranch 99 shopping for the chica, and happened upon one of its cold aisles, specifically the one with juices, kimchi, and eggs. While looking through the misos, I looked at an older Filipino who kept looking at the various offerings of balut. He kept staring for a good minute, then started to dart his eyes around. Suddenly, he grabbed one egg, took out what I assumed to be a spoon, tapped the top of one of the eggs, discarded the subsequent broken shell bits, and scooped whatever was inside into his mouth.

He did this two times, then put the egg back in its place.
