Costa Mesa Declares Itself a “Rule of Law City”: Illegal Immigrants, Wayward Bicyclists Not Welcomed

Costa Mesa is in the national news again due to its Know Nothing, hate-group-loving mayor Allan Mansoor and his use of city policies for grandstanding. Last night, he helped push a resolution naming the city a “Rule of Law City,” whatever the hell that means. Seriously: This resolution says nothing. Absolutely nothing. It says nothing new under the sun in a city that aspires to Arizona asshole-ery but winds up about as substantive as a piƱata. Costa Mesa is against illegals? DUH. This is really about boosting Mansoor's Assembly campaign later this year–but we're not picking on him today. No, our scope is set on Councilwoman Wendy Leece.

Last night, on KCAL-TV Channel 9's 10 o'clock news broadcast, reporter Stephanie Abrams asked Leece if Costa Mesa police officers would now begin harassing immigrants if they committed minor infractions–like, say, jaywalking. Leece said she doesn't think that “is going to happen, but I can't promise that.”

Of course she can't promise that–because it's already happened.

In 2007, the last time Mansoor was crowing about how tough he is on illegal immigrants, Costa Mesa police arrested a Guatemalan for riding his bike on the wrong side of the street. Since he was an illegal immigrant, police handed him over to la migra, which summarily deported him.

Wrong side of the street? In my many years of bike riding, and knowing others who are fanatic peddlers, I've never once heard of anyone getting a ticket for that infraction. Such micromanaging can only come from asshole cops, or direction from up top, which is how Mansoor likes it…but that's another story for another time.

Meanwhile, I find it hilarious that Mansoor and the council frequently issue proclamations against illegals yet don't bother with the city's massive skinhead population and Harbor Boulevard motel meth-heads. Easier to harass brownies than the actual scum of society, eh? BRAVO.
