Court Appointed Special Advocates of Orange County (CASA) is a nonprofit that recruits volunteers to mentor severely abused, neglected and abandoned children and advocate for them in court and other settings. Saturday's CASA WalkRun is a 5K event that helps keep the organization privately funded.

The first-ever “Walk for the Child” actually begins from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, when race bibs and registration packets can be picked up at Road Runner Sports, 24291 Avenida De La Carlota, Laguna Hills. Beginning at 4 p.m., the store offers 10 percent savings on running and walking gear–and 10 percent of sales go back to CASA.
Check-in and race-day registration begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, also at Road Runner Sports. The run/walk starts at 9 a.m., following a route that, based on my sorry sense of direction, seems to head south from the store. An after-party begins at 10 a.m.

That's not the only worthy charity event (are there any other kind?) happening Saturday as the Orange County Ronald McDonald House's 25th anniversary celebration kicks off with a special pancake breakfast for former and current families and partners at Hart Park in Orange.
Serving as a place where families can stay overnight near hospitals where their critically ill children are being treated since the first Orange County house opened in November 1989, the program has since expanded to include two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at the Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) in Orange and Mission Viejo.
Saturday's breakfast runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the park, 701 S. Glassell St., Orange.
