Cannabis Almanac: Your Guide To SoCal’s High Life July 4-8

Don’t these look like rainbow fan leaves in the sky? (photo by: Photo by Kazuend)

It should be a rule that when the Fourth of July falls on a weekday you’re obligated to take the rest of the week off– you know, in celebration of ‘Murica’s Independence and stuff. In all fairness, America deserves a few breather days to recuperate after the all the insanity that’s transpired since, well, January 1, really. We know you’re picking up what we’re putting down, so here’s a list of events happening in the next week that are ideal for exploiting your right as a Californian to smoketh le herb. Enjoy the extended hours of sunlight and days-off while you can! Just remember: Drinking (or ingesting cannabis) and driving is for losers, and losers don’t get days off. Sorry (not sorry).

The Go-Go’s at the Hollywood Bowl

Not sure what to do on the fouth? Not sure where you’re going to watch the fireworks? Ha, well lucky for you the Go-Go’s are playing at the Hollywood Bowl on the Fourth of July, and rumor has it there’s going to be a firework extravaganza after the show. So pack a picnic and let the Go-Go’s show you the beat to jam to on Wednesday night.

Nosaj Thing at Low End Theory

If you haven’t been to Low End Theory, you haven’t lived– especially if you’re into the beat scene. Shockingly, fantastic underground hip hop still exists–yes, even in a world where Drake and Taylor Swift reign the charts. For the last decade, Low End Theory has nurtured some of today’s finest talent, including TOKiMONSTA, Nosaj Thing, Daedelus, Flying Lotus, the Gaslamp Killer and literally hundreds of other beat-driven artists. And this Wednesday– the Fourth of July– Nosaj Thing is headlining. If you think there’s a better place to celebrate, you’re sorely mistaken because the Low End Theory era is coming to an end at the beginning of August. So if you haven’t been, you should go before the once-thriving scene fades into history’s memory. RIP  Low End Theory.

So, if this is how you’d like to spend your 5th of July holiday, you shouldn’t waste any time second-guessing. Plus, the Greek Theater is one of the best venues in Southern California. Talk about an ideal Thursday night.

Reggae On The Beach

Don’t go to work on July 5. Instead, go to Reggae on the Beach at the Newport Dunes and take advantage of the sunlight, high vibes and like-minded appreciation of the cannabis plant. The event is hosted by Jah Faith, and will feature legends Tribal Theory with Pato Banton, and special guests Califa and Simbala. If you’re looking for a local way to nurse that July 4 hangover, this is it. Oh, and you can CAMP here and sleep under the stars. Pretty amazing, right? Plus, if you camp, you get an automatic invite to the after party featuring Bistro with Gregory G. Nothing like a good ‘ol after party and a tent to crash in that’s stumbling distance away.

Dead & Company at Dodger Stadium

Okay. So, John Mayer is obviously NOT Jerry Garcia. He’s kind of (definitely?) a fratboy douche bag, but he has one skill we cannot deny: his guitar prowess. Although we’d much rather see a Jerry hologram fronting the Grateful Dead, we’ll admit that this iteration of the Dead produces a really great live show and overall experience. We saw them on New Years at the Forum and again the last time they played at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater (RIP!), and we had a great time. Attendees–ahem, Deadheads– swarmed the parking lot prior to the show (per usual) and sold shirts, pregamed, smoked herb (and whatever else), and blasted jams before Dead & Company took the stage. Once they went on, everyone’s LSD hit pretty much at the same time and it felt like we transported to the ’60s and had to navigate through a psychedelic human jungle to get through the crowd. The smells of burned sage, cannabis and Santo Palo blended in the air, creating the ultimate hippie smoke out, while Bob Weir, Micky Hart, John Mayer and Bill Kreutzmann raged on stage. People ran around naked, rolled around on the floor, and strangers made-out with each other and scream-sang the words to “Fire On The Mountain.” It was great. We imagine this Dodger Stadium experience will be similar. Our one takeaway from the show: “The only acceptable version of John Mayer is Grateful Dead John Mayer.” The sentiment still remains. But we definitely think you should go.

When: Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 7 p.m.

Where: Dodger Stadium; 1000 Vin Scully Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012
