Big songs that sound simple (but aren’t once you look into the light shining through the cracks)—this was a thing that both the Band and Paul McCartney loved, and now Long Beach’s the Fling are making their own sad-happy song-stories with percussively strummed guitar and little curls of melody from lap steel and Wurlitzer. Recent 45 Out Of My Head has Lennon/Chilton-Bell/Blake-McGinley-Love (that last one is Teenage Fanclub—it’s OK to look it up!) twists and switchbacks at the end of each measure. Hopefully, this month’s Detroit residency hints at a full-length—or a tour with Greater California, themselves quite expert at a sympathetic pop sound—to follow.
