Sergio Mendes

As a kid Sergio Mendes played soccer as much as he played piano, and what but for a few missed goals would have disappeared from the concept
of exotic cool if he’d gone the other direction? But of course he went with Brasil ’66 and splashed into a refined kind of immortality with “Mas Que Nada” and a bossa-nova beat that came to almost possess him bodily. 2006’s unforeseeable collabs with Pharoah Monche and Black Thought revealed old rhythms undulating anew, but this follow-up to
July’s Hollywood Bowl performance should rely cheerfully on the classics.
