Robot Downey Jr.

US Weekly magazine is widely known for its most inane and pointless section, “Celebrities Are Just Like Us.” The spread consists of images of famous people doing things we “normals” do on a daily basis. One image might depict Arnold Schwarzenegger stuffing his face with dessert under the heading, “Arnold terminates his ice cream cone,” while another would show Whoopi Goldberg shopping for toiletries under something like “Whoopi, where are your eyebrows?” The ultimate purpose–other than humiliation–is to show that celebrities are people, too, not gods sent down to entertain us mere mortals. But these images aren't just mindless entertainment for artist and Long Beach Craft Mafia member Steph Calvert-they're inspiration. Siren in Long Beach is showcasing Calvert's inspired renderings in an exhibition titled, “Robots! They're Just Like Us!” Adorable robots star in 20 portraits as they are caught doing everyday human things . . . like eating cupcakes and drinking too much.
Tuesdays-Fridays, 12-6:30 p.m. Starts: Dec. 18. Continues through Jan. 18, 2007
