Latin American Art History Class: “The Baroque World of Fernando Botero”
As part of the Bowers Museum’s latest collection, “The Baroque World of Fernando Botero,” art historian Jacquelyn Powell will provide an in-depth look into the Columbian artist’s creative mind. His style, though immediately recognizable, covers a wide breadth of subjects—from chubby, cherub-faced couples dancing and even chubbier ladies lounging beachside (his Mona Lisa is damn-near pinchable), to highly violent images of tortured prisoners or bloody depictions of mobsters slaying/being slain. Botero’s work, which includes paintings, drawings and sculptures, will be discussed in detail, along with his cultural identification and his artistic commentary on societal issues.
