Break of Dawn

The UCI Film and Video Center was unsure if budget cuts would allow for its fall programming. Good news, though: Not only will the show go on, it’s planning for some impressive screenings and guests. Included are Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Yes Men Fix the World and chances to meet Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa, Taiwanese “Second New Wave” cinema director Tsai Ming-Liang and Oscar-nominee Kirby Dick, who will present the OC premiere of Outrage, his documentary on closeted gay politicians. But for the first screening night: Break of Dawn, a 1988 indie dramatization of LA’s first Spanish-language radio host being framed by the DA. Director Isaac Artenstein will take audience questions after the film.
Break of Dawn presented by the UCI Film and Video Center, Humanities Instructional Building 100, West Peltason Dr. near Mesa Rd., Irvine, (949) 824-7418; www.humanities.uci.edu/fvc/. Reception, 6:30 p.m.; Screening, 7 p.m.
