But I'm a Cheerleader

Director Jamie Babbitt’s 1999 debut is the story of Megan the cheerleader who gets sent to de-gay-ification camp (with counselor RuPaul out of drag!) under dubious pretenses, but through the kind of eventually heartwarming soul-searching that latter-day John Waters likes to use. Well, spoilers and all, it’s OK for you to know that eventually the April March ripper “Chick Habit” is deployed to gloriously encouraging effect. A still-worthy soundtrack and a cast of happy irregulars (Bud Cort! Mink Stole! Ione Sky! Richard Moll!) and colors somewhere between Play-Doh and the Partridge Family on the scale of over-saturated cheerfulness add up to make this a charmer if not quite a minor classic. Also: this screening is a benefit for Long Beach LGBTQIA arts-and-culture supporters the Amp Organization!
