I returned this past Friday from my annual vacation to the World's Longest Yard Sale, the 127 Corridor Sale that goes from Gadsden Alabama, all the way to Michigan and features 700 miles of everything from golf balls to Conestoga wagons for sale. The chica and I always start in Frankfort, Kentucky, because that allows us to go through bourbon country, which allows me to stock up on gifts for folks and a year's worth of hooch for meself.
My three locals all got their goodies upon my return, stuff not stocked in these parts. Memphis at the Santora received a bottle of Collier and McKeel Tennessee Whiskey because–you know–they're repping the Volunteer State. Little Sparrow got Mellow Corn, the firewater corn whiskey that cost me seven bucks and is probably worth less 'cause they're the new kids on the block.
And Chapter One: The Modern Bistro? They got the most elusive gift of all: Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream, which ain't available for sale in California or nearly anywhere else.
I first tasted this liqueur at the legendary Brown Hotel in Louisville, and found it again at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, which I do declare to be heaven on Earth. There, the tour guide gave the chica and I a taste: slightly thicker than Bailey's, but so much better, with hints of vanilla and chocolate cut by Buffalo Trace's legendary bourbon cream. The product is only a couple of years old, so they're not prepared to make it national just yet–neither Total Wine or Hi-Time Wine Cellar carry it. Matter of fact, the only place you can try it right now is Chapter One–co-owners Gabacho Jeff and Argie Jeff barely saw the bottle before swearing they'd start ordering it by the caseload in the coming weeks and working it into all parts of the menu. So stay tuned, go to Chapter One and if you ask nicely, I'm sure they'll let you touch the bottle until the Deluge.
