Bryce Headrick Gets 7 Years in Prison for Attacking Surf City Cop

The younger half of a father and son arrested in February for an attack on a Huntington Beach police officer has been sentenced to seven years in state prison.

Bryce Headrick, 23, of Huntington Beach, pleaded guilty on March 17 to felony aggravated assault on a peace officer, misdemeanor resisting and obstructing another officer and a sentencing enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury.

Around 11:20 p.m. on Feb. 9, Headrick was riding a bicycle near Beach Boulevard and Clay Avenue, where a Surf City cop stopped him for a traffic violation. As the officer and Headrick were talking, the bicyclist’s father Darryl allegedly came up from from behind and assaulted the cop, according to prosecutor Robert Mestman.

Bryce Headrick pleaded guilty to punching the officer, knocking him to the ground, and continuing to punch and kick the cop in the head and body, and at some point the officer lost consciousness, says Mestman, whose office notes 58-year-old Darryl Headrick of Huntington Beach is also accused of participating in the attack before he and his son fled on bikes.

The father was the first to be found near the crime scene and arrested, while the son was picked up several hours later near his home.

The officer was treated for a concussion and other non-life-threatening injuries at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

At Bryce Headrick’s sentencing Friday, the officer, who is not being identified because he is a crime victim, delivered a statement in which he talked about the tremendous impact the beating has had on him and his family. He said it has been particularly hard on his daughter, who was doing a ride-along and witnessed the attack.

Darryl Headrick previously pleaded not guilty to one felony count of aggravated assault on a peace officer, one misdemeanor count of resisting and obstructing another officer, and a sentencing enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury. He could get up to eight years in state prison and a year in jail if he is convicted. He has a pre-trial hearing scheduled on June 27.
