Repeal of the “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy that would have allowed gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military just failed in a 57-40 procedural vote in the U.S. Senate.
Despite two-thirds of Americans and most in the mlitary supporting the repeal, the setback seemingly dooms the notion because another vote is unlikely before the next Senate, which will have more Republicans, is sworn in. All 42 Senate members of the GOP opposed the repeal.
