Better Call Glew: Computer Sexytime Edition!

Hi Mr. Glew,

I have begun receiving nude pictures in my personal email from an anonymous email address.  I do not know who is sending me these pictures because the face is never shown. Is this sexual harassment? Do I have to ask the person to stop sending me the pictures before I can call the police? What can I do to make it stop?

Based on what you have told me in your question, it does not sound as though this is sexual harassment. Federal law prohibits workplace sexual harassment under the Civil Right Act of 1964, Title VII 42 U.S.C. §§ 2000e to 2000e–17.  However, these Federal laws only prohibit workplace sexual harassment, and from what you have told me, there is nothing to indicate that a co-worker is involved and as a result, the conduct you have described is not sexual harassment.

You need not ask the individual sending the offensive pictures to stop before contacting the police, although it is not a bad idea to do so. If you do ask this person to stop, and he or she does not, you have a very good basis for a criminal restraining order or a civil harassment order.    My advice for you is to keep the emails and photos so you have evidence to support a criminal restraining order, or to obtain a civil harassment order, should you choose to do so.
