ORIGINAL POST, JULY 16, 7:35 A.M.: Atheists and Christians take the stage in Huntington Beach to debate “Should Abortion Remain Legal?”

It's another of the thought-provoking events that have been co-sponsored the past two years by the Christian Toastmasters group of Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley-based Backyard Skeptics, which is composed of Orange County atheists, agnostics, non-theists, humanists and others who fear no hell awaits them.

Among those debating the pro-abortion, er, pro-choice side are Sam Marcos University Professor Cecili Chadwick and Backyard Skeptics member Revilee Lake. As the announcement came from the group, I know not who will be taking the opposite position. But Backyard Skeptics did provide the “why” behind the debate:

It is important to have a civil discourse on important questions Do we have a purpose in life? How did I get here: evolution or design? Is there really an afterlife? This debate series has two groups with diametrically opposing world views discussing reasons why each thinks their opinion is more true than the other. There is no other better way to hear such opposing views to decide for oneself which one is more likely to be true.

If only we had a representative body taking on life's issues in a similar way? Looking at Washington D.C. these days, it's hard not to advocate retroactive abortion.

Anyway, the debate begins at 7 p.m. tonight Thursday, July 23, at Huntington Beach Community Church, 8101 Slater Ave., Huntington Beach. It's free!
