Goofy and Mickey found a new hobby.
And Anaheim leaders and residents were pissed about it.
They complained to Disney officials about merchandise being sold at theme-park shops that depicted the beloved characters next to a spray can, The Orange County Register reports. One T-shirt shows Goofy dressed in baggy clothes, his eyes glazed. A baseball cap features Mickey sneaking away from graffiti art dripping on a wall behind him.
The items were part of Disney's “Graphic Edge Collection,” inspired by
street art and meant to appeal to young men. But Disneyland's neighbors in
Anaheim, a city that spends $750,000 per year on graffiti removal, felt the images sent a bad message.
“With Disney, you think of wholesome, family, happiness. You don't think
of Mickey tagging your wall,” Anaheim resident Jason Young told the Register.
Disney responded to concerns by pulling the merchandise from the shelves
this month at the theme parks and Downtown Disney.
