Alberto Callaspo, Angels Third Baseman, Denies Kid at Center of Paternity Case is His

Despite Orange County Child Services petitioning a judge to order Alberto Callaspo to pay $11,498 in monthly child support, the Angels third baseman is reportedly denying the 4-year-old boy at the center of the case is his.

The 28-year-old player whose full name is Alberto Jose
Callaspo Brito requested a paternity test in a May petition to Orange County Family Court, which has scheduled a Nov. 3 hearing on the matter. The boy's Puerto Rican mother, who now resides in Florida, is scheduled to attend via phone.

Brian Martinez has the scoop in the Orange County Register. Mariangely Santana Perez claims she, Callaspo and the boy named Ian lived
together in Kansas City until she learned that the ball player was still married to
the Venezuelan mother of Callaspo's 5-year-old son. Callaspo is from Venezuela.

Perez tells the Register Callaspo had been paying her $4,000 a month,
which she was fine with until he allegedly skipped payments. She claims
to have turned to child services to ensure financial security for the
boy she is certain the Halo fathered. Ian is reportedly
hearing-impaired, and Perez provided the daily a copy of her son's
Aetna PPO health insurance card, which states he is covered by “Major
League Baseball Players Benefit Plan A.”

Callaspo earned an average of
$423,166 annually in three seasons
with the Kansas City Royals before joining the Angels, who upped his
yearly salary to $2 million. Martinez cited court records that show
Callaspo makes $166,667 a month.

Meanwhile, it's unclear whether the Angels will hold onto Callaspo next season, as third base has been identified as a position that should be improved if the team that finished second in the American League West to Texas wants to win the pennant again.
