When the Weekly surmised the May deaths of a couple inside their La Habra home may have been the result of murder-suicide, a police spokeswoman strongly protested. Her department then issued a statement that indicated suicide could not be ruled out as the cause of death for both Alaina and Kevin A'Lurede. But that was before toxicology tests were completed, and with all the evidence now in, the La Habra Police Department now believes the 31-year-old wife shot and killed her 36-year-old husband with a small caliber handgun before she died of an overdose four days later.

Alaina and Kevin A'Lurede Likely Died of Suicides in Their La Habra Duplex: Police
Alaina and Kevin A'Lurede met while attending Fullerton College, where Kevin was the student newspaper's sports editor and Alaina was a photographer at the time. Kevin went on to become a writing instructor at the college and when he failed to show up for a ceremony where he was to get an anthropology degree, family members contacted police.
Officers performing a welfare check at the A'Luredes' duplex in the 600 block of West Greenwood Avenue–which is near La Habra High School–discovered the bodies of the couple. A gun was found in the bedroom near Kevin A'Lurede's body.
No suicide note was located, there was no indication of a suicide pact and detectives have been unable to conclude whether the homicide was premeditated.
