Authorities today were at a loss to explain why the driver of a pickup truck that was speeding north on Harbor Boulevard in Fullerton veered into oncoming traffic at Valencia Mesa Drive, which is across the street from St. Jude Medical Center, around 4 p.m.

That driver of a Ford 150 pickup, 57-year-old Adrian Davis of Brea, is the crash victim who died at the scene, according to the Orange County Coroner's office, which included a date of birth that indicated Davis would have turned 58 on Oct. 16.

It appears the oncoming traffic Davis veered into was stopped at a signal, according to Fullerton Police Sgt. Jeff Stuart.

Stuart told City News Service, “We know the what, but we just don't know the why” the crash happened.

“The carnage of the vehicles is pretty extensive,” Stuart added.

One injured woman walked across the street to St. Jude's for treatment, and doctors and nurses came out of the hospital to help others who were injured, as did area merchants, according to Stuart.

Anyone who may have been a witness was asked to call investigators at (714) 738-6812.

Meanwhile, there was a fatal crash in Irvine earlier today. An 81-year-old man from Newport Beach was turning his vehicle into a parking not near Michelson and University drives about 7:30 a.m. when it was struck by vehicle going west on University, according to Irvine Police Lt. Tom Allan.

The elderly man died, and the 34-year-old driver of the second vehicle was taken to a
nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses are also being sought in that collision–call Detective Jonathan Cherney at (949) 724-7024–which closed all westbound lanes of University between Michelson
and Ridgeline Drive for several hours.
